THEIR STORY

The story of the farm unfortunately starts with a victim of the recent coffee price crisis. A very large farm by Colombian standards, the 52-hectare farm was sold in 2018 after being neglected in the crisis to the family run operation, Café Lumbus. Only 10 percent of the lots were in production, but Catalina and an eager manager, Juan Felipe, saw the potential of these high altitudes and fertile lands.

The family-run Café Lumbus manages their own farms and helps surrounding smallholder farmers improve the quality of their coffee and access fair and equitable prices in the global coffee markets.

ON THE MAP

The climate in Antioquia, Colombia is called Perpetual Spring. The high altitudes and perfect conditions make the microclimate of La Reserve ideal for specialty coffee production.

THE FARM

The name of the farm, La Reserva, comes very naturally. More than half of the land is a protected natural reserve, where various specious live, including the endangered Andean bear, also known as a spectacled bear.

They support their local community by connecting small farmers to external markets and by giving small farmers access to advanced milling technology, marketing, and knowledge-based resources. Most importantly, Café Lumbus reinvests in their community by ensuring that their farmers are given fair prices that exceed the cost of production and meet sustainable requirements.
