A mountainous topography and many tropical micro-climates contribute greatly to Colombia’s reputation for ideal growing conditions, which – in turn – have helped Colombia establish itself as a recognizable ‘brand’ around the world.

Colombia has around 875,000 hectares planted with coffee across 590 municipalities and 14 coffee-growing regions. The majority of this production surprisingly comes from small farms. Most of the country’s 540,000 coffee producers are smallholders who grow on land no larger than 10 hectares, and many of them struggle to make ends meet.

“For us, coffee is everything. It’s what allows us to eat. It means everything to us,” says Gloria Castro, who was raised on the remote coffee farm she runs with her family in Chaparral, Tolima.
