Amilcar lives in the beautiful Alta Verapaz Department in central Guatemala where he grows cardamom and other spices. He has partnered with Burlap & Barrel for years as they seek to further traceability and transparency to the spice trade. This black lime is a new source of income for Pereira to diversify and increase farm profitability.

Amilcar Pereira and his partner, Francisco Lavignino, are the only exporters to grow and process their own spices. Most of the farms in Alta Verapaz are managed by smallholder farmers of Mayan descent. Pereira began his career as a migrant laborer working for these farmers. He has worked his way up to managing an impressive, vertically-integrated farming business. Black lime has helped to reduce the volatility of relying on cardamom and other sources of income. The flavors show an attention-to-detail and expertise in processing that is unparalleled.
