Did you know that the world’s leading producer of cardamom since 1980 is Guatemala? As the third-most expensive spice in the world, cardamom is quite the delicacy. In 1914 a German plantation owner brought green cardamom to Guatemala to grow on his coffee estate. Cardamom grows best in cool, humid climates with high elevation.

Amilcar Pereira and his partner, Francisco Lavignino, are the only exporters to grow and process their own spices. Most of the farms in Alta Verapaz are managed by smallholder farmers of Mayan descent. Pereira began his career as a migrant laborer working for these farmers. He has worked his way up to managing an impressive, vertically-integrated farming business.
